In the frame of the new project GEO-WB6 - Establishing a Geoinformation Centre for the Western Balkans at the Agricultural University Tirana, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), the Agricultural University of Tirana (AUT) and the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) carried out the project’s first capacity building course on “Introduction to Geographic Information Systems” from July 1-5, 2024 at the campus of AUT. A total of 19 course participants from four Western Balkan countries (Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Serbia) came together in Tirana for five days to learn about the basic concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), characteristics of different spatial data types, map projections and georeferencing, principles of mapping and data visualization, and practical GIS applications in research and planning.
